Director:  CLAIRE CHU

Welcome to SPY!  I'm Claire Chu, and I'm excited to serve as your director this summer!  I was raised in a suburb of Atlanta, GA and graduated in 2007 with a double major in Spanish and Psychology from Wake Forest University in North Carolina.  After graduating, I moved to Washington, DC, where I worked to combat human trafficking with a wonderful organization.  After 2 1/2 years, I resigned my position to pursue a Master of Public Health degree.  I will begin my graduate program this upcoming Fall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - but before then, I look forward to this summer of serving with SPY!

In every part of me, God is the writer of my story.  And that story is built upon a love for God and neighbor through my passion for social justice.  Other huge joys in my life involve hiking, running, ultimate frisbee, dancing (ballet, jazz), visual arts, playing guitar, laughing, and living out life in community.  I am incessantly interested in learning about other cultures, speaking other languages, and being taken through the unexpected, unplanned moments of life!

Work Sites: Forrest Shroyer

I graduated last year from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, but am taking an indefinite break from engineering.  After SPY!, I plan on doing a year of AmeriCorps with Habitat for Humanity.  I enjoy hiking, reading, growing things, cooking, playing and watching most sports (primarily soccer), and a whole lot of other stuff too.  I am looking forward to a challenging, rewarding, learning-filled summer at SPY!

 Work Sites:  Adam Cho

Hi, I'm Adam Cho, and I am one of the Construction Interns for Project SPY! 2010. Currently, I attend Virginia Tech down the road, a rising sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering. My home is in northern Virginia, however, I live in Centreville, about 45 minutes outside of DC. I am Korean-American; both my parents were born in Korea and immigrated here. My little sister, Hahna, is 13 years old, and I also have an almost 2-year-old Golden Retriever, Molly.

I've loved to build things all my life; my dad will constantly complain to you how cluttered our basement is, full of random things I've made over the years. Things like entire suits of armor made out of cardboard, and even a balsa wood ship with sails made of paper towels. I moved on to more "advanced" things once I got to high school, which was Thomas Jefferson HS for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA. (May I insert a bragging point here? We just received US News & World Report's #1 High School in the Country for the 4th year running ) Anyway, my senior year I spent an entire year working on a remote controlled, underwater robot that would perform at competition. Unfortunately we didn't do so well at the actual event, but having basically done all the propeller/wiring/remote control work of the robot, I learned quite a lot!

That summer after I graduated, I attended Project SPY! as a participant, so I was in your shoes at one point.  I loved it; the people, the work, and the community and fellowship through God.  Apparently, they loved me too, and I was invited to come back as an intern the next summer!  So here I am, spending not one, not two, but 12 weeks here at Fieldstone, doing it all over again.  And there is nothing else I'd rather be doing.

Community Garden: Sharon Onga

I am a student at Vassar College. My hobbies include film and writing.

Youth Intern: Andrew Hudgins

Hey guys my name is Andrew Hudgins and I am the 2010 Project SPY! youth intern. I just finished up my sophomore year as a Social Work major and Family Studies minor at James Madison University. I’m not entirely sure what I want to do with that after I graduate. I just know that I have a huge heart for service to others, particularly people less fortunate than I, so if I could find some way making a living out of that then that would be perfect! At school I am really involved in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and have spent the last three semesters serving on the Justice Team. Next year I will be leading a freshman guys small group and I am so excited to start and see how God is going to use me in that position.
I’m from a really small town in Virginia called Altavista and I have one sister, Erin, who will be joining me at JMU in the fall. I’m a big sports fan and go to just about all of the football and basketball (both men’s and women’s) games at JMU. Not too big into professional sports, but my girlfriend is working on me to become a Pittsburgh Steelers fan so who knows. Aside from JMU, my favorite team in football or basketball would be Virginia Tech. I am so excited to see what God has in store for me this summer at SPY! and I am really looking forward to meeting and getting to know you guys.

 Programs: Claire Hitchins

Hi campers! I’m Claire Hitchins and I’m your SPY 2010 Program Intern! I just finished my first year at the University of Virginia where I found exciting ways to pursue my Christian faith. From taking classes in the Religious Studies department and participating in bible studies, to training to be a Young Life leader and leading music at Mass each week, the opportunities to encounter Jesus were endless! When I thought about the ways I could spend my first summer after college, I knew that what I really wanted was to continue to grow my relationship with Christ. As a high schooler I went to a camp that’s a lot like SPY – we spent a week doing service in the community during the day, going to programs in the evening, and growing in Christian fellowship. It was there that I learned that to follow Christ is to be a servant. When I heard about SPY, I thought it sounded like the perfect place to spend a summer serving others and God. I hope as a Program Intern I’ll be able to help you experience the Love of God and encourage you to share that love with everyone you encounter during your time at Fieldstone and always!

A little more about me – Hailing from Roanoke Virginia, I’m blessed to live in such close proximity to the beautiful Blue Ridge! I love running, hiking, biking, playing Ultimate Frisbee and generally being outside in the splendor of God’s creation. I feel called to environmental stewardship and am particularly interested in how sustainable agricultural practices and community gardens have the power to heal environmental and social problems. I love that we are made in the image of God the Creator and therefore have the power to create too! Appreciating and participating in human creativity in the form of music, poetry, and visual art are some of my favorite things. I often use the medium of fabric or clothing to express my own creativity and love making music with my guitar, banjo, cello, or voice.

I love good food, learning new things, yoga, praise and worship, farmer’s markets, the music of Sufjan Stevens, Appalachian culture, and sweet times with friends and family. But enough about me, I want to get to know you -- I can’t wait to do just that at SPY this summer!

I grew up in Roanoke. Currently, I am a sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth
University where my major is Liberal Studies of Early and Elementary
Education with a minor in Spanish. I have a pretty wide variety of
interests but two of my current favorite things are cooking/baking and
gardening. I especially love baking, so expect some great desserts
during your time at SPY.
